Venkatesh M. Swamy: The Best Children’s Book of the Year

We asked some people who we know read a lot of Indian children’s and YA books to tell us about one (or more) really impressive book they read this year. We will be posting their replies over the rest of the month.

Venkatesh M. Swamy co-runs Eureka Bookstore and is one of the main forces behind Bookaroo.

The Adventures of Stoob: Testing Times by Samit Basu (Red Turtle)

Make room Jeff Kinney (Wimpy Kid), James Patterson (Middle School) and Adeline Foo (Amos Lee). Samit Basu has just come to the school party.

Ten-year-old Subroto Bandhopadhyay’s (Stoob, for short) life is all about class five, examinations, teachers, girls, friends and enemies. And parents, who want him to study, study and study more. Stoob has many other plans – one of which includes getting to class six without breaking into a sweat.

For those who have read the GameWorld trilogy, Turbulence and Terror on the Titanic and the comics, this is a new Basu. With Stoob, the man who kickstarted Indian English fantasy writing, has added another feather to an already well-adorned cap.
